Lego League: Nature's Fury!
The Shiocton School District Lego League Robotics team, the Lego Bolts, recently competed in the Oshkosh Regional qualifying tournament. Twenty-six teams ranging from Ashwaubenon to Fond du Lac competed at the tournament.
The theme of the competition in 2013 was “Nature’s Fury”. Each team had to research a form of natural disaster and a community that that disaster might impact. The team then had to come up with an innovative way to help improve the lives of those impacted by their chosen disaster. The Lego Bolts studied tsunamis and the coastal town of Valdez, Alaska. The team developed an educational board game to help students learn about tsunamis and emergency planning.
The Lego Bolts finished in the top 3 for Robotic Performance and were nominated for the overall Champions trophy. While they didn't win the Champions trophy, it was nice to be acknowledged as one of the top teams in the Regional. Shiocton was consistently referred to as one of the veteran high scoring teams and one to keep an eye on.
The well rounded performance of our Shiocton team earned it a berth in the State tournament scheduled for December 8th at Appleton East High School. The top 60 teams in the state will compete in the areas of robot design, robot performance, research project presentation and teamwork. The Lego Bolts look forward to a strong showing in that competition.
Shiocton is one of the few districts outside the Appleton area that have a Robotics program. Of the surrounding districts, only the Greenville/Hortonville school district has teams participating in the Lego League competition. This excellent academic program is a definite plus for our district.
Team Lego Bolt is made up of Matthew Wilkinson, Josh Parker, Dylan Van Camp, Justin Hellweg, Maddie Daniels, Josh Wilkinson, Brandon Rohloff and Logan Heindl. They are coached by Steve Parker and Denelle Daniels. The Shiocton Lego team is generously sponsored by the St. John’s Family Fund administered by the Shiocton School District.
