Creative Writing

Ms. Tetzlaff’s Creative Writing Syllabus

Ms. Amanda Tetzlaff

(920) 986-3351 ext. 765

atetzlaf@shiocton.k12.wi.us

Course Description:

In Creative Writing, students will focus on writing a variety of creative pieces in many different styles and genres.  Students will strengthen their voice and experience writing through many different perspectives.  We will explore writing to entertain and writing to express one’s self. By thinking deeply and creatively about different writing topics, students will get to know themselves better.  We will do creative journals daily to generate interesting and unique ideas. Students will also strengthen vocabulary and writing conventions, while having fun taking risks with word choice and sentence structure.

Grading:

All graded work will be worth a certain amount of points that a student can earn.  The main graded work in this class will be our major writing assignments.  Other work will include: homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and participation.  Participation is an important part of this class because of the amount of discussion and class/small group activities we will do; therefore, students will earn a participation grade weekly.  They will earn full points for being active and thoughtful participants in class, helpful partners/group members, and being prepared.

Grading Scale:

A         100-95%

A-        94-93%

B+       92-91%

Requirements:

What you need for this class:

ü  A notebook JUST for this class.  We will have DAILY CREATIVE JOURNALS!

ü  A folder for this class.

ü  A writing utensil. Having both a pen and pencil may be helpful.

ü  An open mind!

Expectations:

ü  RESPECT!

ü  Be to class on time, and be working when the bell rings. School tardy policy is in effect.

ü  Bring your class notebook and other materials to class EVERY DAY.

ü  Participate in class every day; it is part of your grade!

ü  No offensive language.

ü  All school policies are in effect in this classroom.

ü  I expect that you will come see me if you have any problems or need help. I am always willing to help!

ü  Hand things in on time.

o   Late work: Each day an assignment is late is 10% off your grade, until 50%. After 50% work can only be turned in for a maximum of half points.

§  It is your responsibility to get assignments for classes you miss.

§  If you know you are going to gone, plan ahead and see me beforehand.

§  Students will not be granted deadline extensions if they are absent on a day a long-term assignment is due; they must turn it in immediately upon returning to school.

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism or cheating is a very serious offense and will not be tolerated in any form.  This includes “copy and paste” and getting “help” from a friend in the class.  Helping each other is encouraged, but “help” is not giving each other the answers!  If you want to quote another person’s words, you must cite them.  Another’s words that you pass off as your own is stealing and defeats the purpose of the assignment.  If you have questions about what is ok, you should always ask.  We will learn how to properly cite sources in class.  Basically, just don’t copy – in any form!  I want to know what you think, not someone else!

Contacting Me:

I am always open to listen to any questions or concerns, and to offer extra assistance.  Feel free to see me before or after school (let me know when you’re coming), or during my prep hour.  Outside of school hours, e-mail is the best way to reach me.  I welcome any inquiries from you or your parents!
