2022-2023 Season Review
The 2022-2023 Shiocton Boys Basketball season was a challenging season with four returning seniors that combined to account for 85% of our season's scoring. Jacob Klitzke, Dawson Schmidt, Harrison Hofacker, and Bennett Wilcox stepped up to the challenge this year and put some big numbers on the scoreboard.
Our season started in a hurry. With the football team going to state on Thursday, our team started their basketball season’s first practice the very next day. To top it all off, our team was coached by a first year varsity coach. The coaching staff was put together that very next week. They did an excellent job by pouring their heart and soul into these young men throughout the season. This year's program had a full roster for Varsity, JV1 and JV2. Both coaches and players participated in morning and/or afternoon practices to help prepare the players. A big thank you to Shane Kanaman and Deven Bedor for their time and talent as assistant coaches.
By Christmas break, our Varsity team had a 3-4 record. However, we went 7-2 in January and by February, we had control of the conference going with an 8-0 record in league play at that point. Weyauwega had given us two very memorable games as we won each game by 2 points. There also was a tough loss to Division 3 State Champions Brillion with a score of 89-71. Overall on the season, our Varsity team would finish 14-11 and 11-3 in the conference.
Our non-conference schedule was tough with a combined record of 188-77 (wins/losses). This tough schedule paired with our record earned us a #4 seed. With a first round bye and a home game against Oconto, we came up short with a 86-83 loss ending our season a few games sooner than we wanted.
This season had its challenges and it wasn’t the season we had hoped for this past June, but we were able to win the conference and bring home some big recognitions for some of our players. Dawson Schmidt broke the school scoring record with 1,952 points, and he was also selected for Conference Player of the Year while earning a spot on 1st Team All-Conference. Bennett Wilcox was selected for 2nd Team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-Conference was given to Bennett Schmidt. The team averaged 71.9 points a game and a school record with 257 - 3 point baskets made.
As mentioned earlier, this season started in a hurry. There were a lot of challenges and hurdles to overcome, but coming together as a team we saw our way through. We hit some of our goals, while having fun along the way and we are already gearing up for summer basketball to begin. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the team this year and GO CHIEFS!
